INSTED@Körber Studio Junge Regie 2009

From June 26th until April 1st INSTED attended the Körber Studio Junge Regie Festival in Hamburg, Germany. During this festival all directors from Germany, Switzerland and Austria showed their graduating performances. INSTED was there with a delegation of 8 members from Serbia, Israel, the U.K. and Holland. In total we saw 9 graduating performances, and all of the performances were discussed the following day. Every day a small festival newspaper was published, with reviews of all the performances.

On the second day of the Körber Studio Festival INSTED organised a lunch to meet with and talk to the graduating directors. This was a very interesting and fruitful meeting, which also got a raving review in the festival newspaper! On Monday two performances from the Theaterschool in Amsterdam played at the festival, which were generally well received and led to more discussions about German theatre, and the differences between German and Dutch theatre.

The 9 graduating performances were all very different from one another. Most of them were based on text, and a lot of the focus seemed to lie on the form of the performance (sometimes more than on the content). We saw more ‘classical’ performances, but also form-experiments. We saw actors, performers, dancing actors and even children on stage. And then there were also the ‘late night performances’, by directing students of the school in Hamburg. These were mostly short performances by second and third year students.

The winner of the festival turned out to be “Unvollkommen”, directed by Daniel Pflüger from Zürich. “Unvollkommen” was a dance performance, loosely based on Ovid’s Metamorphosis. The fact that this performance won the festival was somewhat surprising, because it was not text based and used actors as dancers. Originally the idea was to get the winner of the Körber Studio Festival to play at the ITs Festival in June, but it is not yet clear if Daniel and his actors will be able to make it, so we might invite another performance from the Körber Studio Festival to come to the ITs Festival. Of course we will keep you posted!

All in all we had a wonderful but exhausting week in Hamburg. We met a lot of people, saw a lot of theatre, had interesting discussions and last but not least we also had a lot of fun!
