INSTED@Körber Studio Junge Regie Festival
For the past two years the Körber Studio Junge Regie festival in Hamburg, Germany invited INSTED to visit their festival with a group of international theatre students, to watch the performances and participate in group discussions.
In 2010 INSTED visited the KSJR again with a group of international students in theatre directing. This year INSTED also hosted a discussion for all young directors at the festival, to discuss their ideas about theatre today and in the future.
Below you'll find a report of our visit.
Körber Studio Junge regie 2010 in Hamburg
As always, INSTED was very happy to be invited to the Körber festival. Joost and Anke travelled on the 18th of June to Hamburg to enjoy the long week of German, Swiss and Austrian student theatre. The young directors who visited the festival with us were Dana Etgar (Israel), Marijana Cosic (Serbia) and Steffen Jäger (Austria).
We were happy to see that the festival’s first step towards internationalisation last year with a performance from the Amsterdam School of Arts, got a follow up. This year the Festival invited the polish production Baal, which also participated in the contest. Baal was a third year piece by Joanna Grabowiecka (Warschauer Theaterakademie ‚Aleksander Zelwerowicz’) from Warschau.
We saw many different productions, who all had a different story and a different style. Also there was a lot to see at the Zeisse Hallen at the Hamburg drama school. The Körber studio festival is always looking for the right way to talk about performances in the discussion. This year INSTED joined the discussions at the international table, together with the Polish directors and some German students.
INSTED also hosted its own meeting with twenty directors. It was a wonderful and open conversation about directing, which had a very different atmosphere than the usual cold war theatre discussions. We spoke about rehearsing, about what drives us to direct theatre, and about internationalisation. Many good ideas came from the meeting, like working together with international directors, actors, musicians en scenographers for a week somewhere in Europe. We will keep you posted about anything that will come out of it.
INSTED gained a lot of new members, and met a lot of old. We are also very happy that the Körber festival winner Vom Schlachten des gemästeten Lamms und vom Aufrüsten der Aufrechten, a piece by Kristofer Gudmundsson, Gesine Hohmann and Stephan Stock, will come to the ITs Festival in Amsterdam. So those who weren’t at Körber still have a chance to see them in Amsterdam.
After a seven day marathon of long group discussions, twelve performances, late night theater at the Zeisse Hallen, combined with the appropriate amount of German beer, Anke and I were quite tired. We hope all of the other Körber visitors regained there strength at home and are busy working on their performances. We had a wonderful time and we hope to see you all at the ITs Festival!
